Tips for playing
Read the paint before the subject. A flat, evenly lit surface with gold or a shallow background belongs to the fifteenth century; heavy shadow and dramatic gesture to the seventeenth; pale, powdery colour and pastoral scenes to the eighteenth; visible separate brushstrokes and ordinary modern life to the nineteenth. Flattened space and unmixed colour usually mean the twentieth.
How this measure is defined
The century comes from the start of the date the museum records for the work. Only centuries the collection represents well enough to be a fair option are offered, and the four choices sit close together on the timeline, so the answer is rarely obvious by elimination.
