How many of the 197 world flags can you name?
Identify the country behind each flag. Type its name to answer and move straight to the next flag when you are correct. Wrong guesses can be tried again until you give up, and there is no timer.
How to play
- A flag fills the board. Type the name of its country in the box below. Capital letters, accents and punctuation do not matter, and common alternatives such as “UK” or “Ivory Coast” are accepted.
- A correct answer is accepted by itself after a short pause and the next round begins. Press Enter to check any other answer.
- A wrong guess is marked so you can try again, as often as you like. There is no timer.
- Stuck? Press Finish to end the run: the answer is revealed and that flag counts as missed.
- Your score is the number of flags you name in one run. All 197 are shuffled, and none repeats until you have seen every one. The answer review below the board lists the run’s rounds.
- Your result is saved in this browser. Once enough people have played a game, the results also show how your score ranks, and you can copy or share an image of your result, or replay.
Tips for playing
Look for distinctive symbols, stripe direction, and the order of colours. Similar flags can belong to different countries, so check the details before submitting.

Frequently asked questions
How many flags are in the quiz?
197: one for each country in the world map quiz, including Kosovo, Palestine, Taiwan and Vatican City.
What happens if I guess wrong?
Nothing is lost. A wrong guess is marked and you can try again as often as you like; the run only ends when you press Finish, which reveals the answer.
Which flags are easiest to confuse?
Chad and Romania are nearly identical blue, yellow and red tricolours; Indonesia and Monaco are both red over white; and Ireland and Ivory Coast use the same three colours in mirrored order. Remember one difference for each pair.
Where do the flag images come from?
Wikimedia Commons. Each is the current national flag Wikidata lists for the country, in its official proportions. All are public domain except the flag of Oman, used under the Open Government Licence – Oman 1.0.
Read a flag in three passes
- Layout: horizontal bands, vertical bands, a cross, a triangle or a single field?
- Colour order: read top to bottom or from the hoist outward. The same colours in a different order can mean a different answer.
- Emblem: only then inspect stars, coats of arms and small central symbols.
When two flags look almost identical
Treat a colour match as a shortlist, not an answer. Similar designs can differ in their emblem or proportions, and small shade differences are unreliable on different screens. Remembering one distinguishing feature is more useful than memorising a thumbnail’s exact shade. Use the answer review to revisit the designs that you confuse.
