List of Countries by Continent

All 197 countries in our geography quizzes, grouped by continent and sorted A to Z: Africa 54, Asia 49, Europe 45, North America 23, South America 12 and Oceania 14. Each name links to a profile with the country’s flag, capital, outline map, land neighbours and World Bank figures ranked against its continent and the world.

The list includes Kosovo, Taiwan, Palestine and Vatican City. Dependent territories such as Greenland are not listed separately. It is the list our quizzes use, not a statement about recognition or borders.

About the data

Population, area, GDP, life expectancy and the other measures come from World Bank Open Data, each in its own latest year with wide country coverage. A profile ranks a country against the world and its continent among the countries that report the measure, counting from the highest value; values that read the same share a rank, as in the games’ answer tables.

Area is total area: land plus inland water such as lakes and rivers, without seas or coastal waters.

The World Bank publishes none of these measures for Taiwan and Vatican City.

The World Bank figure for Canada, Croatia, the Dominican Republic, Monaco, Norway, Sweden and the United Arab Emirates also counts coastal or internal sea waters. The World Bank figure for Russia also counts Crimea, which Ukraine’s figure also includes. For these countries the official total area is used instead (Canada: Statistics Canada; Croatia: CIA World Factbook; Dominican Republic: CIA World Factbook; Monaco: World Bank land area; Norway: Kartverket, with Svalbard and Jan Mayen; Russia: CIA World Factbook; Sweden: Statistics Sweden; United Arab Emirates: UAE Government).

The Marshall Islands, Micronesia and Palau have no CO₂ per person figure here. For Micronesia, the World Bank figure, under 0.01 t, is far below the Global Carbon Project’s estimate of about 1.3 t for 2024. For the Marshall Islands, the World Bank figure, under 0.01 t, is far below the Global Carbon Project’s estimate of about 4.1 t for 2024. For Palau, the World Bank figure, about 83 t, is far above the Global Carbon Project’s estimate of about 12.8 t for 2024.

Capitals are the answers our capitals quizzes accept, adapted from mledoze/countries with reviewed exceptions; where several cities are accepted for a disputed capital, the profile lists them all. Land neighbours also follow mledoze/countries and count only borders between the 197 countries listed here: borders of overseas territories (such as French Guiana) and of territories outside the list (such as Western Sahara and Gibraltar) are left out.

A country without land neighbours is compared with the four countries closest to it. Distances are the shortest gap between the two countries’ outlines on Natural Earth’s 1:50m map, counting every island within 36° of each country’s largest landmass (so French overseas departments do not count as France), rounded to 10 km. A country too small for that map is measured from its centre point.

The flag images are Wikimedia Commons files, credited on each profile; outlines, centre points and the locator map come from Natural Earth. Flag proportions are those of the images our quizzes use, and look-alike flags are found by comparing the colours of every pair of flags.
