Can you name China’s 31 mainland province-level divisions, plus Hong Kong and Macau?

This quiz covers the 31 province-level divisions of mainland China (22 provinces, 5 autonomous regions and 4 municipalities) plus the special administrative regions of Hong Kong and Macau. Type each name to fill in the map; Hong Kong and Macau are marked with dots.

How to play

  1. Type the name of any province-level division in the box at the bottom of the map. Capital letters, accents and punctuation do not matter, and older spellings such as “Szechuan” or “Peking” and names such as “Xizang” are accepted.
  2. A correct name is accepted by itself after a short pause. It turns green on the map and is ticked off in its group below the map. A wrong name costs nothing; just keep typing.
  3. Use the + and − buttons to zoom in on small province-level divisions, then drag to move around. With the map selected, the + and − keys zoom and the arrow keys move it. Select a province-level division you have named to highlight it.
  4. There is no timer. The game ends when you have named all 33, or press Finish at any time to end it and reveal the province-level divisions you missed.
  5. Your result is saved in this browser. Once enough people have played a game, the results also show how your score ranks, and you can copy or share an image of your result, or replay.

Tips for playing

Start with the vast regions of the west and north, Xinjiang, Tibet, Qinghai and Inner Mongolia, then work through the north-east and down the coast to Guangdong and the island of Hainan. Many names come in pairs: Hebei and Henan lie north and south of the Yellow River, Hubei and Hunan north and south of Dongting Lake, and Shandong and Shanxi east and west of the Taihang Mountains.
