Can you name all 13 provinces and territories of Canada?

Canada is divided into 10 provinces and 3 territories. Type each one to fill it in on the map, from British Columbia on the Pacific to Newfoundland and Labrador on the Atlantic and Nunavut in the Arctic. There is no timer, and when you finish the map shows any you missed.

How to play

  1. Type the name of any province or territory in the box at the bottom of the map. Capital letters, accents and punctuation do not matter, and two-letter postal codes such as “QC” or “BC” are accepted, as are French names such as “Québec”.
  2. A correct name is accepted by itself after a short pause. It turns green on the map and is ticked off in its group below the map. A wrong name costs nothing; just keep typing.
  3. Use the + and − buttons to zoom in on small provinces and territories, then drag to move around. With the map selected, the + and − keys zoom and the arrow keys move it. Select a province or territory you have named to highlight it.
  4. There is no timer. The game ends when you have named all 13, or press Finish at any time to end it and reveal the provinces and territories you missed.
  5. Your result is saved in this browser. Once enough people have played a game, the results also show how your score ranks, and you can copy or share an image of your result, or replay.

Tips for playing

Work from west to east: British Columbia, the three Prairie provinces (Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba), Ontario and Quebec, then the four Atlantic provinces. Go north last for Yukon, the Northwest Territories and Nunavut. Prince Edward Island is small, so zoom in on the Gulf of St. Lawrence to find it.

Frequently asked questions

How many provinces and territories does Canada have?

13: 10 provinces and 3 territories. The quiz asks for all of them, and the answer list below the map keeps the two groups apart.

Can I type abbreviations like QC or NWT?

Yes. Each province and territory’s two-letter postal code counts, along with “PEI” and “NWT”, and French names such as “Nouvelle-Écosse” or “Terre-Neuve-et-Labrador” work too. Capital letters and accents never matter.

Is Nunavut a province?

No. Nunavut, the Northwest Territories and Yukon are territories: their powers are delegated by the federal government, while the provinces hold their own under the Constitution. The quiz counts both, for 13 answers.

What are the provincial and territorial capitals?

Edmonton (Alberta), Victoria (British Columbia), Winnipeg (Manitoba), Fredericton (New Brunswick), St. John's (Newfoundland and Labrador), Halifax (Nova Scotia), Toronto (Ontario), Charlottetown (Prince Edward Island), Quebec City (Quebec), Regina (Saskatchewan), Yellowknife (Northwest Territories), Iqaluit (Nunavut) and Whitehorse (Yukon). Ottawa, the national capital, is in Ontario but is not a provincial capital; Ontario’s is Toronto.

Which is the largest of Canada’s provinces and territories?

Nunavut. Measured on this map, it covers the most area of the 13 answers, and Prince Edward Island the least.

Provinces in a row, territories in the north

The ten provinces run in a band from British Columbia in the west to Newfoundland and Labrador in the east. The three territories lie to the north: Yukon beside Alaska, the Northwest Territories in the middle and Nunavut, which takes in most of the Arctic islands and the west coast of Hudson Bay.

The Arctic islands make the north look crowded, but they are shared between just two territories, Nunavut and the Northwest Territories, so there are only three names to find in the whole north.

Which provinces and territories count?

All 13: the 10 provinces and 3 territories. Islands count with the province or territory that governs them, such as Vancouver Island with British Columbia and Baffin Island with Nunavut.
