Can you name all 50 US states on the map?

Name the 50 US states on the map. Type an answer to fill in its location and keep track of your progress. There is no timer; finish whenever you are ready and review the answers you missed.

How to play

  1. Type the name of any state in the box at the bottom of the map. Capital letters, accents and punctuation do not matter, and two-letter postal abbreviations such as “TX” are accepted.
  2. A correct name is accepted by itself after a short pause. It turns green on the map and is ticked off in its group below the map. A wrong name costs nothing; just keep typing.
  3. Use the + and − buttons to zoom in on small states, then drag to move around. With the map selected, the + and − keys zoom and the arrow keys move it. Select a state you have named to highlight it.
  4. There is no timer. The game ends when you have named all 50, or press Finish at any time to end it and reveal the states you missed.
  5. Your result is saved in this browser. Once enough people have played a game, the results also show how your score ranks, and you can copy or share an image of your result, or replay.

Tips for playing

Try naming states region by region, then check Alaska and Hawaii. Both full names and two-letter postal abbreviations are accepted. Use the map zoom controls to explore smaller states.

Frequently asked questions

Can I type state abbreviations?

Yes. Each state’s two-letter postal abbreviation counts as well as its full name, so “TX” fills in Texas.

Is Washington, D.C. included?

No. The quiz counts the 50 states only; Washington, D.C. and US territories are not answers.

Why are Alaska and Hawaii in the wrong place?

They are drawn as insets so the whole map fits the screen. Their position and size on the map do not show their real scale or distance from the other 48 states.

How many states have “New” in their name?

4: New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico and New York.

Is there a time limit?

No. Take as long as you like, and press Finish whenever you want to stop and see the states you missed.

Use neighbours instead of alphabetical recall

Pick a coastline or a familiar state and move to its neighbours. This turns a list-memory exercise into a map-memory exercise. When you get stuck, start a second route on the opposite coast and work inward.

Alaska and Hawaii are displayed as insets, so their position and scale on this screen do not describe their actual distance from the contiguous states. The game counts states only: Washington, D.C. and US territories are not additional answers.

Sources

Source: US Census Bureau / us-atlas · 2017 boundaries · us-atlas 3.0.1

The 50 states use Census cartographic boundaries redistributed as us-atlas TopoJSON. Boundaries are simplified for a quiz and are not a surveying reference. Alaska and Hawaii are placed in insets.
