Can you name the 13 regions of metropolitan France?

Since 2016, metropolitan France has been divided into 13 regions, including the island of Corsica. Name each one to fill in the map, in English or in French. The five overseas regions are not part of this quiz.

How to play

  1. Type the name of any region in the box at the bottom of the map. Capital letters, accents and punctuation do not matter, and French names such as “Bretagne” or “Occitanie” are accepted.
  2. A correct name is accepted by itself after a short pause. It turns green on the map and is ticked off in its group below the map. A wrong name costs nothing; just keep typing.
  3. Use the + and − buttons to zoom in on small regions, then drag to move around. With the map selected, the + and − keys zoom and the arrow keys move it. Select a region you have named to highlight it.
  4. There is no timer. The game ends when you have named all 13, or press Finish at any time to end it and reveal the regions you missed.
  5. Your result is saved in this browser. Once enough people have played a game, the results also show how your score ranks, and you can copy or share an image of your result, or replay.

Tips for playing

Many regions are named after historic provinces or their place on the map. Brittany is the western peninsula and Normandy lies on the Channel to its east, while Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur runs from the Rhône to the Italian border. Hauts-de-France (“upper France”) is the northernmost region and Grand Est the north-eastern one.

Thirteen regions since 2016

Brittany, Corsica, Île-de-France, Centre-Val de Loire, Pays de la Loire and Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur kept their borders; the other seven are mergers, such as Nouvelle-Aquitaine and Grand Est. Older maps still show the former regions, such as Alsace and Picardy.

The 13 regions of metropolitan France, including Corsica, which has a special status as a territorial collectivity. The five overseas regions are not included.
