Can you name all 20 regions of Italy?
Italy has 20 regions, from the Alpine Aosta Valley in the north-west to the islands of Sicily and Sardinia. Type each region in English or Italian to fill in the map. The answer list groups them into five parts of the country.
How to play
- Type the name of any region in the box at the bottom of the map. Capital letters, accents and punctuation do not matter, and Italian names such as “Toscana” or “Lombardia” are accepted.
- A correct name is accepted by itself after a short pause. It turns green on the map and is ticked off in its group below the map. A wrong name costs nothing; just keep typing.
- Use the + and − buttons to zoom in on small regions, then drag to move around. With the map selected, the + and − keys zoom and the arrow keys move it. Select a region you have named to highlight it.
- There is no timer. The game ends when you have named all 20, or press Finish at any time to end it and reveal the regions you missed.
- Your result is saved in this browser. Once enough people have played a game, the results also show how your score ranks, and you can copy or share an image of your result, or replay.
Tips for playing
Follow the boot: the northern regions sit along the Alps and the Po valley, the centre runs from Tuscany and Marche to Lazio, and the south continues to Calabria at the toe and Apulia at the heel. Finish with Sicily and Sardinia. Molise, Umbria and Basilicata are easy to overlook.

20. The answer list groups them into the five areas Italy’s statistics office uses: North-West 4, North-East 4, Centre 4, South 6 and Islands 2.
Can I type Italian names?
Yes. English and Italian names both count: Tuscany or “Toscana”, Apulia or “Puglia”, Sicily or “Sicilia”, Aosta Valley or “Valle d'Aosta”. “Trentino-South Tyrol” also works for Trentino-Alto Adige.
Are San Marino and Vatican City included?
No. San Marino and Vatican City are independent countries surrounded by Italy, not Italian regions, so they are not answers.
What are the regional capitals of Italy?
Aosta (Aosta Valley), Genoa (Liguria), Milan (Lombardy), Turin (Piedmont), Bologna (Emilia-Romagna), Trieste (Friuli-Venezia Giulia), Trento (Trentino-Alto Adige), Venice (Veneto), Rome (Lazio), Ancona (Marche), Florence (Tuscany), Perugia (Umbria), L'Aquila (Abruzzo), Bari (Apulia), Potenza (Basilicata), Catanzaro (Calabria), Naples (Campania), Campobasso (Molise), Cagliari (Sardinia) and Palermo (Sicily).
Which is the smallest of Italy’s regions?
Aosta Valley. Measured on this map, it covers the least area of the 20 answers.
Five regions with special status
Five regions have special statutes that give them more autonomy: Aosta Valley, Trentino-Alto Adige, Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Sicily and Sardinia. The other fifteen have ordinary statutes. All twenty count the same in the quiz.
Which regions count?
All 20 regions. Trentino-Alto Adige is one answer, although its two provinces, Trento and Bolzano, have their own autonomy. San Marino and Vatican City are not answers.
