Can you name Spain’s 17 autonomous communities and 2 autonomous cities?

Spain is divided into 17 autonomous communities and two autonomous cities, Ceuta and Melilla, on the North African coast. Fill in all 19 on the map; the Canary Islands sit in a framed inset at the bottom left, at the same scale.

How to play

  1. Type the name of any community or city in the box at the bottom of the map. Capital letters, accents and punctuation do not matter, and Spanish and regional names such as “Cataluña”, “Catalunya” or “País Vasco” are accepted.
  2. A correct name is accepted by itself after a short pause. It turns green on the map and is ticked off in its group below the map. A wrong name costs nothing; just keep typing.
  3. Use the + and − buttons to zoom in on small communities and cities, then drag to move around. With the map selected, the + and − keys zoom and the arrow keys move it. Select a community or city you have named to highlight it.
  4. There is no timer. The game ends when you have named all 19, or press Finish at any time to end it and reveal the communities and cities you missed.
  5. Your result is saved in this browser. Once enough people have played a game, the results also show how your score ranks, and you can copy or share an image of your result, or replay.

Tips for playing

Start with the large communities of the interior: Castile and León, Castilla-La Mancha, Extremadura and Aragon. Then follow the north coast from Galicia to the Basque Country and the Mediterranean coast from Catalonia down to Andalusia. Finish with the Balearic and Canary Islands and the dots for Ceuta and Melilla.

Frequently asked questions

How many autonomous communities does Spain have?

17, plus the 2 autonomous cities of Ceuta and Melilla. The quiz asks for all 19.

Can I use Spanish or regional names?

Yes. Catalonia also takes “Cataluña” and “Catalunya”, the Basque Country “País Vasco” and “Euskadi”, Andalusia “Andalucía”, and the Community of Madrid simply “Madrid”. Accents never matter.

Are Ceuta and Melilla in the quiz?

Yes. The two autonomous cities on the North African coast are answers, marked on the map with dots. They are not autonomous communities, so the quiz has 19 answers in all.

What are the capitals of the autonomous communities?

Most communities have one capital, listed in the answer key below. In the Basque Country, Vitoria-Gasteiz is the de facto capital (seat of the Basque Government and Parliament). In the Canary Islands, the capital is shared by Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and Santa Cruz de Tenerife. In Castile and León, Valladolid is the de facto capital (seat of the regional government). Ceuta and Melilla have no separate capital.

Which is the smallest of Spain’s communities and cities?

Melilla. Measured on this map, it covers the least area of the 19 answers.

One province or nine

Some communities are a single province, such as Asturias, Cantabria, La Rioja, Madrid, Murcia, Navarre and the Balearic Islands, while Andalusia has eight provinces and Castile and León nine. The quiz asks only for the communities, so province names such as Seville or Barcelona are not answers.

Which communities and cities count?

All 17 autonomous communities and the 2 autonomous cities, Ceuta and Melilla. The Balearic Islands and the Canary Islands are communities of their own.
