Can you name all 23 countries of North America?

This North America quiz covers 23 countries across the northern mainland, Central America, and the Caribbean. Name each country to fill in the map. Take your time exploring the smaller islands, then review your answers when you finish.

How to play

  1. Type the name of any country in the box at the bottom of the map. Capital letters, accents and punctuation do not matter, and common alternative names are accepted.
  2. A correct name is accepted by itself after a short pause. It turns green on the map and is ticked off in its group below the map. A wrong name costs nothing; just keep typing.
  3. Use the + and − buttons to zoom in on small countries, then drag to move around. With the map selected, the + and − keys zoom and the arrow keys move it. Select a country you have named to highlight it.
  4. There is no timer. The game ends when you have named all 23, or press Finish at any time to end it and reveal the countries you missed.
  5. Your result is saved in this browser. Once enough people have played a game, the results also show how your score ranks, and you can copy or share an image of your result, or replay.

Tips for playing

After Canada, the United States, and Mexico, work south through Central America and then around the Caribbean. Dominica and the Dominican Republic are different answers. Remember countries with longer names, such as Saint Kitts and Nevis and Saint Vincent and the Grenadines.

Frequently asked questions

How many countries are in North America?

23 in this quiz. The list includes Central America and the Caribbean. Greenland, Puerto Rico and other dependent territories are not separate answers.

Are Dominica and the Dominican Republic different answers?

Yes. They are two separate Caribbean countries, and both are in the quiz.

Is there a time limit?

No. Take as long as you like, and press Finish whenever you want to stop and see the countries you missed.

What is the largest country in North America by area?

Canada, with a total area of 9,984,670 km² (Statistics Canada).

Which country in North America has the most people?

United States, with a population of 341,784,857 (World Bank estimate, 2025).

Remember the Caribbean pass

The northern mainland takes up most of the screen, but it is only part of the answer list. Trace Central America in order before switching to a deliberate tour of the Caribbean.

For island countries, practise the names as well as their position. Similar names are easy to confuse when typing quickly. The answer review is useful for checking whether you forgot a country altogether or mixed it up with another one.

Which countries count?

Central America and the Caribbean are included in North America for this game. Greenland, Puerto Rico, and other dependent territories are not separate answers in the 23-country list.
