Can you name the capital of all 23 countries of North America?

Each round shows a country of North America and its flag; type its capital. Three capitals share their country’s name: Guatemala City, Mexico City and Panama City. Wrong guesses can be tried again, there is no timer, and naming all 23 completes the run.

How to play

  1. Each round shows a country’s name and flag. Type its capital in the box below. Capital letters, accents and punctuation do not matter, and where a country has several capitals or a separate seat of government, any listed city is accepted, along with common alternative spellings.
  2. A correct answer is accepted by itself after a short pause and the next round begins. Press Enter to check any other answer.
  3. A wrong guess is marked so you can try again, as often as you like. There is no timer.
  4. Stuck? Press Finish to end the run: the answer is revealed and that country counts as missed.
  5. The 23 capitals of North America come in shuffled order, each once. Your score counts up to 23 at the top of the board, and naming the last one completes the run. The answer review below the board lists every round.
  6. Your result is saved in this browser. Once enough people have played a game, the results also show how your score ranks, and you can copy or share an image of your result, or replay.

Tips for playing

Think about the official capital rather than the best-known city: in this set, the capital of Canada is Ottawa and the capital of the United States is Washington D.C.

Frequently asked questions

How many capitals are in the Capitals of North America quiz?

23, one for each country of North America in the site’s 197-country list. Central America and the Caribbean are included; Greenland, Puerto Rico and other dependent territories are not separate answers.

Which capitals share their country’s name?

Guatemala City (Guatemala), Mexico City (Mexico) and Panama City (Panama). Type the full name where the capital adds a word: “Guatemala” alone is not accepted for Guatemala City.

Do I need to type accents or punctuation?

No. Accents and punctuation are optional, so “San Jose” counts for San José and “Saint Johns” counts for Saint John's. Capital letters do not matter either.

What happens if I guess wrong?

Nothing is lost. The guess is marked and you can try again as often as you like. The run ends when you name all 23 or press Finish, which reveals the answer.

Where do the answers come from?

From the mledoze/countries dataset (Open Database License 1.0), adapted with accepted alternative spellings and seats of government and last reviewed in October 2026. The full list of accepted answers is below.

  3. Belize: Belmopan (Belize City is not accepted).

Capitals of North America at a glance

  1. Two capitals start with “Saint”: Saint John's (Antigua and Barbuda) and St. George's (Grenada).
  2. Two capitals start with “San”: San José (Costa Rica) and San Salvador (El Salvador).
  3. Two capitals start with “Port”: Port-au-Prince (Haiti) and Port of Spain (Trinidad and Tobago).
  4. Other names the game accepts: “St. John's” for Saint John's, “Saint George's” for St. George's, “Ciudad de Mexico” for Mexico City and “Washington” for Washington D.C.
