Can you name the capital of all 54 countries of Africa?

Each round shows a country of Africa and its flag; type its capital. Eswatini and South Africa have more than one accepted city and Djibouti shares its country’s name. Wrong guesses can be tried again, there is no timer, and naming all 54 completes the run.

How to play

  1. Each round shows a country’s name and flag. Type its capital in the box below. Capital letters, accents and punctuation do not matter, and where a country has several capitals or a separate seat of government, any listed city is accepted, along with common alternative spellings.
  2. A correct answer is accepted by itself after a short pause and the next round begins. Press Enter to check any other answer.
  3. A wrong guess is marked so you can try again, as often as you like. There is no timer.
  4. Stuck? Press Finish to end the run: the answer is revealed and that country counts as missed.
  5. The 54 capitals of Africa come in shuffled order, each once. Your score counts up to 54 at the top of the board, and naming the last one completes the run. The answer review below the board lists every round.
  6. Your result is saved in this browser. Once enough people have played a game, the results also show how your score ranks, and you can copy or share an image of your result, or replay.

Tips for playing

Think about the official capital rather than the best-known city: in this set, the capital of Nigeria is Abuja and the capital of Ivory Coast is Yamoussoukro.

Frequently asked questions

How many capitals are in the Capitals of Africa quiz?

54, one for each country of Africa in the site’s 197-country list. Western Sahara is not a separate answer.

Which countries of Africa have more than one accepted capital?

Eswatini (Mbabane or Lobamba) and South Africa (Pretoria or Bloemfontein or Cape Town). Where a country divides its capital functions or has a separate seat of government, any listed city counts.

Which capitals share their country’s name?

Djibouti (Djibouti). Typing the country’s name is accepted.

Do I need to type accents or punctuation?

No. Accents and punctuation are optional, so “Yaounde” counts for Yaoundé and “Sao Tome” counts for São Tomé. Capital letters do not matter either.

What happens if I guess wrong?

Nothing is lost. The guess is marked and you can try again as often as you like. The run ends when you name all 54 or press Finish, which reveals the answer.

Where do the answers come from?

From the mledoze/countries dataset (Open Database License 1.0), adapted with accepted alternative spellings and seats of government and last reviewed in October 2026. The full list of accepted answers is below.

Capitals to double-check

  3. Tanzania: Dodoma (Dar es Salaam is not accepted).
  4. Morocco: Rabat (Casablanca is not accepted).
  5. Benin: Porto-Novo (Cotonou is not accepted).
  6. Burundi: Gitega (Bujumbura is not accepted).
  7. Equatorial Guinea: Ciudad de la Paz (Malabo is not accepted).
  8. Cameroon: Yaoundé (Douala is not accepted).

Shorter capitals quizzes in Africa

One shorter capitals quiz covers part of this list: the Middle East (Egypt, plus 16 countries counted in Asia). The other 53 countries are in no shorter quiz.
