Can you name all 54 countries of Africa?

Explore Africa from the Mediterranean coast to the Cape, then look offshore for its island countries. Name all 54 countries on the map, filling in each location as you go. There is no timer, and you can review the answers when you finish.

How to play

  1. Type the name of any country in the box at the bottom of the map. Capital letters, accents and punctuation do not matter, and common alternative names are accepted.
  2. A correct name is accepted by itself after a short pause. It turns green on the map and is ticked off in its group below the map. A wrong name costs nothing; just keep typing.
  3. Use the + and − buttons to zoom in on small countries, then drag to move around. With the map selected, the + and − keys zoom and the arrow keys move it. Select a country you have named to highlight it.
  4. There is no timer. The game ends when you have named all 54, or press Finish at any time to end it and reveal the countries you missed.
  5. Your result is saved in this browser. Once enough people have played a game, the results also show how your score ranks, and you can copy or share an image of your result, or replay.

Tips for playing

Start with a familiar coastline, then work inland. The Democratic Republic of the Congo and the Republic of the Congo are separate answers: “DR Congo” and “Congo” are accepted respectively. Remember the island countries, including Cabo Verde, Comoros, Mauritius, São Tomé and Príncipe, and Seychelles.

Frequently asked questions

How many countries are in Africa?

54 in this quiz. Western Sahara is not a separate answer.

Are “DR Congo” and “Congo” different answers?

Yes. “DR Congo” is the Democratic Republic of the Congo and “Congo” is the Republic of the Congo; their full names work too. “Ivory Coast” and “Côte d’Ivoire” are both accepted, as are “Cabo Verde” and “Cape Verde”.

Is there a time limit?

No. Take as long as you like, and press Finish whenever you want to stop and see the countries you missed.

What is the largest country in Africa by area?

Algeria, with a total area of 2,381,740 km² (World Bank, 2023).

Which country in Africa has the most people?

Nigeria, with a population of 237,527,782 (World Bank estimate, 2025).

Coastlines, inland neighbours and islands

Try three passes: the Mediterranean and Atlantic edges, the Indian Ocean edge, and the interior. A landlocked country is easier to recall when you can place it between neighbours you have already filled in.

Save an island pass for the end. Islands are visually small at continental scale but count just as much as large mainland answers. If you remember a country but cannot see its shape, submitting the name still tests your recall without requiring a precise click.

Which countries count?

This quiz uses 54 entries from the world game’s country list. Western Sahara is not a separate answer. “Ivory Coast” and “Côte d’Ivoire” are both accepted, as are “Cabo Verde” and “Cape Verde”.
