Can you name all 45 countries of Europe?

Test your knowledge of the 45 countries in this Europe map quiz. Follow coastlines, peninsulas, and borders, then zoom in to find smaller places. There is no countdown, so you can take time to work through the map before reviewing missed answers.

How to play

  1. Type the name of any country in the box at the bottom of the map. Capital letters, accents and punctuation do not matter, and common alternative names are accepted.
  2. A correct name is accepted by itself after a short pause. It turns green on the map and is ticked off in its group below the map. A wrong name costs nothing; just keep typing.
  3. Use the + and − buttons to zoom in on small countries, then drag to move around. With the map selected, the + and − keys zoom and the arrow keys move it. Select a country you have named to highlight it.
  4. There is no timer. The game ends when you have named all 45, or press Finish at any time to end it and reveal the countries you missed.
  5. Your result is saved in this browser. Once enough people have played a game, the results also show how your score ranks, and you can copy or share an image of your result, or replay.

Tips for playing

Try the Nordic countries, the Baltic states, and the Balkans as smaller groups. Remember Andorra, Liechtenstein, Monaco, San Marino, and Vatican City. The United Kingdom is one answer in this game; England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland are not scored separately.

Frequently asked questions

How many countries are in Europe?

45 in this quiz. The list includes Russia and Kosovo; Türkiye, Cyprus, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia and Kazakhstan are counted in Asia instead.

Do England, Scotland and Wales count separately?

No. The United Kingdom is one answer, and “UK”, “Great Britain” and “Britain” are accepted for it. England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland are not scored separately.

Is there a time limit?

No. Take as long as you like, and press Finish whenever you want to stop and see the countries you missed.

What is the largest country in Europe by area?

Russia, with a total area of 17,098,242 km² (CIA World Factbook). Vatican City and Kosovo have no World Bank figure.

Which country in Europe has the most people?

Russia, with a population of 143,513,328 (World Bank estimate, 2025). Vatican City has no World Bank figure.

A second pass for small states

Once the large outlines are filled, look along the boundaries of their neighbours for small states. A label or click target is not required: typing the name is enough even when the feature is barely visible.

The Nordic countries, Baltic states and Balkans provide useful smaller recall groups. Keep the game’s country list in mind: a familiar constituent nation or territory is not necessarily a separate scored answer.

Which countries count?

This quiz includes Russia and Kosovo in Europe. Türkiye, Cyprus, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, and Kazakhstan appear in the Asia quiz instead. Each entry belongs to one group in the game, even where geographical conventions differ.
