Can you name the capital of all 17 countries of the Middle East?

The list follows Wikipedia’s countries usually considered part of the Middle East, from Egypt and Türkiye to Iran and Yemen. Each round shows one of the 17 countries and its flag; type its capital. Palestine has more than one accepted city and Kuwait City shares its country’s name. Wrong guesses can be tried again, there is no timer, and naming all 17 completes the run.

How to play

  1. Each round shows a country’s name and flag. Type its capital in the box below. Capital letters, accents and punctuation do not matter, and where a country has several capitals or a separate seat of government, any listed city is accepted, along with common alternative spellings.
  2. A correct answer is accepted by itself after a short pause and the next round begins. Press Enter to check any other answer.
  3. A wrong guess is marked so you can try again, as often as you like. There is no timer.
  4. Stuck? Press Finish to end the run: the answer is revealed and that country counts as missed.
  5. The 17 capitals of the Middle East come in shuffled order, each once. Your score counts up to 17 at the top of the board, and naming the last one completes the run. The answer review below the board lists every round.
  6. Your result is saved in this browser. Once enough people have played a game, the results also show how your score ranks, and you can copy or share an image of your result, or replay.

Frequently asked questions

How many capitals are in the Capitals of the Middle East quiz?

17, following Wikipedia’s list of countries usually considered part of the Middle East. The guide below gives the full definition and its sources.

Which countries of the Middle East have more than one accepted capital?

Palestine (Ramallah or East Jerusalem). Where a country divides its capital functions or has a separate seat of government, any listed city counts.

Which capitals share their country’s name?

Kuwait City (Kuwait). Type the full name where the capital adds a word: “Kuwait” alone is not accepted for Kuwait City.

Do I need to type accents or punctuation?

No. Accents and punctuation are optional, so “Sanaa” counts for Sana'a. Capital letters do not matter either.

What happens if I guess wrong?

Nothing is lost. The guess is marked and you can try again as often as you like. The run ends when you name all 17 or press Finish, which reveals the answer.

Where do the answers come from?

From the mledoze/countries dataset (Open Database License 1.0), adapted with accepted alternative spellings and seats of government and last reviewed in October 2026. The full list of accepted answers is below.

Capitals to double-check

A country’s capital is not always the city it is best known for. In this set:

  1. United Arab Emirates: Abu Dhabi (Dubai is not accepted).
  2. Türkiye: Ankara (Istanbul is not accepted).
  3. Saudi Arabia: Riyadh (Jeddah is not accepted).

Which countries count?

The 17 countries that Wikipedia's Middle East article lists as usually considered part of the region: the Arabian Peninsula, the Levant, Iraq, Iran, Türkiye, Cyprus and Egypt. Not included: the South Caucasus (Armenia, Azerbaijan and Georgia, which UN M49 places in Western Asia), Afghanistan, Pakistan and North Africa west of Egypt. The British base areas of Akrotiri and Dhekelia are not in the site's country list. Egypt is in the Capitals of Africa quiz; the other 16 are in the Capitals of Asia quiz.
