Can you name all 12 countries of South America?

Name all 12 countries in this South America map quiz. Use the Pacific and Atlantic coastlines to orient yourself, then fill in the inland countries. Play without a timer and check the answers you missed at the end.

How to play

  1. Type the name of any country in the box at the bottom of the map. Capital letters, accents and punctuation do not matter, and common alternative names are accepted.
  2. A correct name is accepted by itself after a short pause. It turns green on the map and is ticked off in its group below the map. A wrong name costs nothing; just keep typing.
  3. Use the + and − buttons to zoom in on small countries, then drag to move around. With the map selected, the + and − keys zoom and the arrow keys move it. Select a country you have named to highlight it.
  4. There is no timer. The game ends when you have named all 12, or press Finish at any time to end it and reveal the countries you missed.
  5. Your result is saved in this browser. Once enough people have played a game, the results also show how your score ranks, and you can copy or share an image of your result, or replay.

Tips for playing

Follow the Pacific coast before moving across the continent. Bolivia and Paraguay are the two landlocked answers. Along the north coast, remember both Guyana and Suriname; French Guiana is not an additional country answer.

Which South American countries are landlocked?

Two: Bolivia and Paraguay. Every other country in the quiz has a coastline.

Is there a time limit?

No. Take as long as you like, and press Finish whenever you want to stop and see the countries you missed.

What is the largest country in South America by area?

Brazil, with a total area of 8,510,420 km² (World Bank, 2023).

Which country in South America has the most people?

Brazil, with a population of 212,812,405 (World Bank estimate, 2025).

Look inward after tracing the coast

A clockwise trip around the coast is a useful first pass. Then look for the landlocked gaps: a coast-only strategy can leave correct-looking blank space in the middle.

Distinguish a country from a territory before using the map’s printed geography as an answer list. This quiz’s 12 answers follow the scope below, so every separate shape is not necessarily a separate scored country.

Which countries count?

The game’s South America list contains 12 countries. French Guiana and the Falkland Islands are not separate answers. Central American countries belong to the North America quiz.
