Can you name all 26 states of Brazil and the Federal District?
Brazil has 26 states and the Federal District around Brasília, grouped into five regions. Fill in all 27 on the map, from Roraima on the northern border to Rio Grande do Sul in the far south. Accents are optional.
How to play
- Type the name of any state in the box at the bottom of the map. Capital letters, accents and punctuation do not matter, and two-letter codes such as “SP” or “RJ” are accepted.
- A correct name is accepted by itself after a short pause. It turns green on the map and is ticked off in its group below the map. A wrong name costs nothing; just keep typing.
- Use the + and − buttons to zoom in on small states, then drag to move around. With the map selected, the + and − keys zoom and the arrow keys move it. Select a state you have named to highlight it.
- There is no timer. The game ends when you have named all 27, or press Finish at any time to end it and reveal the states you missed.
- Your result is saved in this browser. Once enough people have played a game, the results also show how your score ranks, and you can copy or share an image of your result, or replay.
Tips for playing
Use the five regions in the answer list: the huge North around the Amazon, the nine states of the Northeast, the Central-West with the Federal District, the Southeast with São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, and the three southern states. Zoom in on the north-eastern coast, where several small states sit side by side.

Frequently asked questions
How many states does Brazil have?
26, plus the Federal District, 27 federative units in all. The quiz asks for every one, grouped by region: North 7, Northeast 9, Central-West 4, Southeast 4 and South 3.
Do accents matter?
No. “Sao Paulo” and “São Paulo” both work, as do “Para” and “Pará”. Each state’s two-letter code also counts, such as “MG” for Minas Gerais and “DF” for the Federal District, which also takes “Distrito Federal”.
Is the Federal District a state?
No. The Federal District holds the national capital, Brasília, and is a federative unit of its own rather than a state, but it counts as an answer here, which makes 27 places to find.
Which Brazilian states share a name with their capital?
Only Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo. Every other state’s capital has a different name, such as Manaus (Amazonas) and Salvador (Bahia), and the national capital, Brasília, is in the Federal District.
Which is the largest of Brazil’s states?
Amazonas. Measured on this map, it covers the most area of the 27 answers, and the Federal District the least.
Five regions
The answer list follows the five regions defined by Brazil’s statistics office, IBGE: North (7), Northeast (9), Central-West (4), Southeast (4) and South (3). The Federal District is counted in the Central-West.
Which states count?
All 26 states and the Federal District. Oceanic islands far off the coast, such as Fernando de Noronha, are not drawn.
