Can you name all 54 flags of Africa?

Name the country behind each of the 54 flags of Africa, from Algeria to Zimbabwe. Watch for close pairs such as Mali and Senegal, and Guinea and Mali. Wrong guesses can be tried again, there is no timer, and the run is complete when you have named all 54.

How to play

  1. A flag fills the board. Type the name of its country in the box below. Capital letters, accents and punctuation do not matter, and common alternative names such as “Ivory Coast” or “UK” are accepted.
  2. A correct answer is accepted by itself after a short pause and the next round begins. Press Enter to check any other answer.
  3. A wrong guess is marked so you can try again, as often as you like. There is no timer.
  4. Stuck? Press Finish to end the run: the answer is revealed and that flag counts as missed.
  5. The 54 flags of Africa come in shuffled order, each once. Your score counts up to 54 at the top of the board, and naming the last one completes the run. The answer review below the board lists every round.
  6. Your result is saved in this browser. Once enough people have played a game, the results also show how your score ranks, and you can copy or share an image of your result, or replay.

Tips for playing

Read each flag in three passes: the layout (bands, a cross, a triangle), the order of the colours from the flagpole or from the top, then any emblem. Often the emblem is the only difference: Senegal’s flag is Mali’s with a green star added.

Where do the flag images come from?

Wikimedia Commons: each is the current national flag Wikidata lists for the country, in its official proportions. All are public domain.

How to tell Africa’s look-alike flags apart

  2. Guinea and Mali: the same three colours in reverse order, red–yellow–green for Guinea and green–yellow–red for Mali, reading from the flagpole.
  3. Cameroon and Senegal: each has a star on a green, red or yellow tricolour; Cameroon’s yellow star sits on a red centre band, Senegal’s green star on a yellow one.
  4. Kenya and Malawi: black, red and green horizontal bands; Kenya adds a shield and spears with white edging, Malawi a red rising sun on the black band.
