Understanding the comparison
This is largely population multiplied by productivity, so big countries win most pairs. The interesting cases are mid-sized rich countries against large poorer ones. A small, wealthy country rarely outranks a large one here, which is the opposite of the per-person game — playing both back to back makes the difference obvious.
How this measure is defined
Total gross domestic product in current US dollars at market exchange rates, measuring output in one year rather than accumulated wealth. Exchange-rate swings move these figures between years without any change in real output, so year-to-year comparisons of the same country are unreliable.
