Understanding the comparison
Roughly 2.1 births per woman keeps a population steady without migration, and that line splits the map cleanly. Most of Europe and East Asia sit well below it, with South Korea the lowest in the world. The highest rates are concentrated in central and western Africa. Income tracks this more closely than any other measure in these games.
How this measure is defined
The total fertility rate is the number of children a woman would have across her lifetime at the age-specific birth rates of the reference year. It is a synthetic measure for one year, not a count of completed families, and it says nothing on its own about population growth, which also depends on mortality and migration.
