Land area is the trap: Canada, Australia and Kazakhstan are vast and thinly populated, while Bangladesh, the Philippines and Vietnam pack far more people into far less space. Nigeria and Ethiopia are larger than most people guess, and Egypt outweighs every other country in its region.
How this measure is defined
The value counts everyone resident in the country during the reference year, regardless of citizenship. It is a mid-year estimate compiled from censuses and registers rather than a live count, and it is a total rather than a density, so it says nothing about how crowded a country feels.
