Understanding the comparison
Wealth and urbanisation move together, but not tightly. Several Gulf states and small island countries are near-completely urban, while rich Switzerland sits lower than you might guess. Some of the least urban countries are in East Africa and South Asia, where most people still live in rural districts.
How this measure is defined
Each country defines “urban” for itself, using population thresholds, density, or administrative status. Those definitions differ enough that two countries within a few points of each other are not strictly comparable. The value is the share of the total population, not the number of city dwellers.
