About this game

Which country spends more per person on health? Compare current health expenditure per resident in US dollars and choose higher or lower. The range spans several hundredfold, from a few dollars a year to many thousands.

Understanding the comparison

Spending is not the same as outcomes. The United States spends far more per person than any other country without leading on life expectancy, which the life expectancy game shows plainly. Wealthy European countries cluster together, and the figure tracks income more closely than any measure of health.

How this measure is defined

Current health expenditure per person in US dollars, combining government, compulsory insurance, voluntary insurance and out-of-pocket spending. Capital investment such as new hospital buildings is excluded. It measures money spent, not the quantity or quality of care received, and exchange-rate conversion affects the comparison.
